Art Mortimer has been painting murals since 1971 and has painted
over 70 murals in the course of his career. He is based in Santa
Monica in the greater Los Angeles area, but has traveled widely
painting his murals. Many of Art's murals are Community Murals, designed to enhance and give focus to communities wishing to build community pride and attract visitors. In California, Art has painted Community Murals in the towns of Twentynine Palms, Lompoc, Susanville, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Sepulveda, Long Beach, Santa Paula, Upland, and Claremont. He has also painted murals in Billings, Montana and in New York City. Private commissions have ranged from work for major corporations (Rockwell International, Kodak, HealthNet, and Bloomingdales among others) to many smaller businesses and corporations, restaurants, private residences, schools, etc.. Art was born in Long Beach, California, and is a graduate of Occidental College in Eagle Rock, California. He moved to Santa Monica in 1965, and painted his first mural in 1971 on the side of the house he was living in, at the beach in Santa Monica. He still lives and works at the beach in Santa Monica. Considered one of the originators of the mural movement in Los Angeles, his mural work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and photographic collections, as well as in newspapers, magazines, books, television and films all across the United States and in many countries around the world. Art's paintings, mostly landscapes and/or cityscapes and many of them of the beach in Santa Monica, are exhibited and sold in several galleries in Southern California, including Seidman Gallery in Santa Monica and Tirage Gallery in Pasadena. He is currently a part-time faculty member at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles (since 1998), teaching a variety of painting classes including Mural Painting and Life Painting, and has taught classes and workshops on mural painting in a variety of schools and communities. He is vice president of the board of directors of the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization working to preserve the rich cultural heritage of murals in the greater Los Angeles area, and a member of the National Society of Mural Painters. |
