Helms Coach Gone A’Rye Mural Restoration

Art painted this mural in 2002 for the owners of the former Helms Bakery property in Culver City, CA. The Helms Bakery delivered fresh-baked goods to households all across Los Angeles County in the first half of the 20th century with its fleet of custom built trucks.

The mural depicts an idealized scene of Culver City in the 1930s, with a realistic 3-D replica of a Helms delivery truck sticking out of the wall as though it has crashed into it. The concept is that the driver, seeing the mural, was trying to go back in time to where he came from, knocking over a fire hydrant and creating a fountain under the truck in the process.

Over the years there had been some deterioration in the mural, and in 2019 the owners commissioned Art to return and restore the mural. Art rejuvenated the original coating, and retouched and restored the painting wherever necessary. He then applied 2 layers of a clear, archival coating that will protect and preserve the mural for many years to come.
